Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is an approach to excellent communication, both with yourself and with others. It is a set of tools and techniques used in self-help, self-development, education, therapy, coaching, business, and sport. It is based on an analysis of the strategy behind the way successful people think and act. It is also an attitude and methodology of knowledge about achieving goals.

According to the theoretical assumptions of NLP, people feel and act based on how they perceive the world. We can discern only small parts because we are limited by such filters as experiences, beliefs, values, assumptions, and biological sensory systems. Each of us has an individual map of the world that allows us to perceive the greatest number of available choices and perspectives. This map is a result of interaction between the mind/body and the language (what we say).

Impoverished and unrealistic maps can limit choices and cause problems. According to NLP, to achieve our goals in personal development, we need to identify useless or destructive thought patterns based on impoverished maps of ourselves and the outside world, and then modify or replace them with more useful ones.
